['təʊnzend], Sir (seit 1941) John Sealy Edward, britischer Physiker, * Galway 7. 6. 1868, ✝ Oxford 16. 2. 1957; 1900-41 Professor in Oxford. Townsend gelang 1898 die Bestimmung der Elementarladung mittels einer Tröpfchenmethode, ab 1900 untersuchte er den Stromdurchgang und die Ionisationsprozesse in Gasen; dabei gab er eine Erklärung der Stoßionisation. Unabhängig von C. Ramsauer entdeckte er die Energieabhängigkeit der mittleren freien Weglänge von Elektronen in Gasen sowie den Ramsauer-Effekt.
